Chapter 10

A mellow, golden light spilled into the master bedroom, but it was the sound of the storm door banging against the frame that woke Niveah up. Trying to remember how she’d ended up in bed, she rolled onto her back and stretched her hands above her head. Damien must have carried her upstairs, because there was no way she had been strong enough to walk on her own.

A few hours ago, Damien had whispered goodbye in her ear. She had a vague recollection of him playing with her hair and kissing her on the lips, but as she thought more about it, she realized how implausible it was. That wasn’t Damien. He wasn’t the romantic type. Like her, he was looking for a good time and nothing more.

Niveah rolled out of bed. It hurt to move, and every muscle in her body ached. Why had she let Damien convince her to try something new? The next time he suggested they try the Joystick Joyride, she was faking a headache. The position called for extreme flexibility, and she’d had to call on everything she’d learned in gymnastics to keep from crashing to the floor.

The scent of passion fruit was heavy in the air, causing her to wonder if Damien had showered before he left. As she hobbled down the stairs, she glanced out the window. Free from clouds, the sky was clear and blue. Next door, children splashed in a kiddie pool, playing and laughing gleefully. It was the perfect day to kick back at the beach, but Niveah had no plans to sunbathe. There was work to be done on the S.W.A.G. campaign and no time to waste.

Desperate for a cup of hot coffee, she entered the kitchen and headed straight for the coffeemaker. Niveah’s eyes widened and her jaw dropped. Positioned on the island next to the fruit bowl was a lavish gift basket. Bubbling with excitement, she ripped open the cellophane and inspected each item. The package of chocolate-covered marshmallows. The sixteen-ounce mug with the words “Boss Lady” splashed across it. The box of edible condoms. Stuffed with an assortment of gourmet foods and a dozen brands of imported coffee, the gift basket looked expensive and smelled divine. How had Damien pulled this off?

Niveah reached for the cordless phone. There was only one way to find out. While she waited for the call to connect, she ripped open the bag of macadamia nuts and tossed some into her mouth. “Hello? Damien?”

“I’m sorry, but he’s not available right now.”

Niveah tensed at the sound of the woman’s voice. Was she his lover? A live-in girlfriend? Last night, Damien told her he was single, but now some chick was answering his cell phone. Add to that, she sounded like a teenager. What was with all these men chasing after young girls? First her ex and now Damien. Realizing she was jumping to conclusions, she shelved the thought. “Okay, thanks. I’ll try him again later—”

Silence followed, then she heard a loud rustling sound.
